Dr. Silena Heron, who influenced a generation of herbalists and naturopathic physicians through her teaching, clinical work, medicine making, writing, and speaking, was a practitioner of natural medicine for over 20 years.
Silena was a folk herbalist, trained by several traditional healers, as well as a psychiatric and critical care nurse for many years before obtaining her naturopathic degree from Bastyr University in 1988. Dr. Heron maintained a busy family practice in Sedona, Arizona, as well as teaching and lecturing around the country and writing on botanical medicine. She was the first chair of the botanical medicine department at Bastry University and served as a faculty member in that department for 6 years. She was a founding member and vice president of the Botanical Medicine Academy, a recognized specialty society of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians dedicated to developing voluntary certifications for practitioners of botanical medicine.
In 1982, Silena founded Heron Botanicals, Inc. under the name Botanical Pharmaceuticals. As an herbalist and a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Heron’s creations were a confluence of many methods and techniques that were tested time and time again in her clinical practice. Later, she renamed the company Elan Botanicals (meaning vigor and liveliness) in order to emphasize the company's use of fresh plants as the primary source of marc in our macerations. In 2001, Dr. Heron was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and in an effort to see to her own needs, she sold the company to a group of successors who later renamed the company Heron Botanicals, in her honor. She passed away on October 15, 2005.
For some, Silena was often difficult to get along with and demanding. For others the relationship was uncomplicated and deep. Regardless of the relationship one had with her there were a few things that could not be questioned; her commitment to healing others was unequalled and if she was a friend, she was a friend of the truest kind. She was a strong woman, uncompromising, dogged and persistent.
While her presence is sorely missed, we at Heron Botanicals are proud to carry on her legacy.
